A delisting is not a bankruptcy
A survivorship-bias-free backtest has to know why a stock left: an acquisition pays out, a failed listing standard usually doesn't. Each Form 25 is classified from the filing itself: who filed it (the exchange or the issuer), the rule it cites and the security.
- Exchange and security class on 89% of delistings, and exchange transfers (NYSE to Nasdaq) kept apart from exits.
- Effective dates from the filing, or the 10-day rule when the filing doesn't state one, with the basis recorded.
- Honest about unknowns: a filing that doesn't say why is classified unknown, not guessed.
